School Road Safety Ambassadors

School Road Safety Ambassadors (RSA) is a best practice program initiated by SDAF. Youths and RSA receive a day of training at their school to gain the necessary skills to become future ambassadors. Students can intervene in a safe and appropriate way when potentially hurtful situations develop. This is not peer mediation. The program empowers youth to observe, communicate, negotiate, and refer incidents of cruelty acts. Peers can intervene to halve road deaths and serious injuries around school zones by 2030. If you are passionate about improving your own road safety in the community and around your school SDAF is always there to help you or your school with road safety awareness. School road safety ambassador has a very important role, their job is to work alongside SDAF to promote road safety around school zones and the community to make sure everyone in the village is safe. They are also responsible for promoting sustainable ways of active travel to keep our road safety and air clean. We also have a team of Year 5 Road Safety Ambassadors they work with the RSAs to help spread the road safety knowledge whilst in the school grounds. Our team and Road Safety Ambassadors organise many road safety events throughout the year, so keep your eyes peeled!

“Our children are our future. It’s part of our jobs as public officials, educators, and parents to help ensure that our children grow up to respect the rights of others. The School safety Ambassadors Program will help to change the road user behavior and the environment in our school zones, so that incidents and other inappropriate behavior are reduced. Through the program, we can begin to create a generation of young people who treat others with kindness, dignity, and respect to save more lives with road safety. Thank you all for being interested and involved in road safety. You will have different reasons for being involved and different ideas about how to encourage your friends, peer group and fellow pupils to think about their safety on the roads… Whilst we will give you as much help as we can, we want to learn from you and share the best ideas. From all of us at Safedrive Africa Foundation, a very big thank you.” Isaac Mutashi- SDAF Global Road Safety Ambassador

Road Safety Awareness Raising Programmes Ages 5 to 15

Young children as well as teenagers often act on an impulse, when this happens when they walk the street, ride bicycle or play near traffic the results can be catastrophic. Early childhood development shows that children develop their cognitive, physical and conceptual understanding of location, environment, space, distance, side sight and speed at different stages (and ages). Older children are easily distracted by peer pressure, over confidence and at times the wish to show-off.

Road Safety Support

Road traffic injuries claim more than 1.2 million lives each year with a disproportionate impact on health and development. They are the ninth leading cause of death across all age groups globally and the leading cause among young people aged between 15 and 29 years, costing approximately 3% of GDP and 5% in low- and middle-income countries (World Health Organization, WHO. 2015). Reflecting the urgency to pay attention to road safety, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has set a goal of reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by 50 percent by 2020 (SDG 3.6).

Teaching Children about Road Safety

Children will learn about road safety from a very early age, with their child-minder, at nursery or at school. However, it is important that these messages are reinforced by parents and carers.
While structured education is valuable, children also learn by what they observe. They will copy the behaviour of the adults that they spend the most time with. If they see you taking risks, they are likely to do the same.
The following steps will help you to reinforce the road safety messages that they will have heard elsewhere, and will keep you safe too

Placement of school crossing patrols
School Crossing Patrols are provided where children are in danger from road traffic when walking to and from school. This does not necessarily mean the patrol will be positioned directly outside a school but at some point along the route where the need is measured to be greatest.
