Your safety as a passenger
When you are a passenger in a car you have the right to be safe. Any driver who speeds or drives whilst distracted is putting themselves, their passengers and other road users at risk of being killed or seriously injured.
Below are a few of Safedrive Africa Foundation NGO for road safety advice to help make you a safe passenger:
Do:
- Always wear your seatbelt, even on if you are in the back or it is only a short journey.
- By not putting your seat belt on in the back you could kill someone in the front as well as yourself.
- Take a moment to adjust the head restraint.
- If you feel unsafe in a car explain to the driver what is making you feel this way, for example:
- If you’re in a car and the driver’s going too fast, tell them to slow down.
- If a driver starts to use a mobile phone or is chatting and getting distracted, tell them to stop talking and focus on the road.
- On long journeys encourage the driver to take regular breaks.
Do not:
- Distract the driver unnecessarily- but speak up if you need to.
- Encourage the driver to speed – it is better to get to your destination late than not at all.
- Accept a lift from someone who you know has been drinking alcohol or taking drugs.
- Encourage the driver to keep driving if they are tired - they need to take a break.
